It Doesn't Get More Girlish Than a June Bride EDITOR'S NOTE: It's never been my intent to be overtly political in this space. After all, this is The Year of Living Girlishly, not The Year of Living as a Loud-Mouthed Liberal. If that were the case, I could call this project The Year of Being Myself and have a much easier time writing it. However, I don't think I could address the topic of weddings this month without noting that on May 17, 2004, Massachusetts became the first U.S. State to allow homosexual couples to marry legally. Marriage shouldn't be political. It should be about the public recognition of a private truth. I believe we cheapen marriage when we make it an instrument of discrimination. I believe we threaten everyone's freedom when we allow discrimination to be written into our laws. I'm glad that as I write this, our society has taken a first step toward my ideal. I hope other steps will follow. The Diva is in the Details
