Everyone knows someone who has a make up tick, an ever-present bit of ridiculous and garish artifice. Maybe this person you know wears way too much mascara, to the point where you wonder if she ever takes it off. Maybe it's heavily caked foundation that doesn't quite match her skin tone or hot-pink blush in two violent stripes under her cheek bones. You think to yourself, “she's such a lovely person, why on earth does she think that looks good?” The answer is that she doesn't. She doesn't think about it at all.
This is what happens when make up becomes a routine. You no longer look at yourself critically which, sad to say, is part of the process of wearing cosmetics. After a while there's a certain robotic quality to painting your face. You get to where you can do the basics while balancing your check book and pulling on your coat.
